I’m not sure I actually ‘love’ the Queen but having grown up in Canadian schools like you, Leah, and just always having her in the background, I think it will really hit me when she’s gone. I just finished reading “The Palace Papers”. So interesting! The British tabloids have made the lives of the Royals sheer hell. Anyway, I love your writing, Leah!

Thanks Laurie. I feel exactly the same way as you about the Queen, as do most Canadians (I think). And it's an interesting point you make about the tabloids because the attitude to the monarchy is very different here in the UK. It's a much more divisive issue for a whole host a reasons. They royals are both omnipresent in the press and weirdly invisible. For instance, the only time my sons have sung God Save the Queen (to my knowledge) is at a handful of professional football matches.... they don't even know the words. To their own national anthem! (But as their republican father points out, it's quite a silly national anthem.) Still, I'm not sure what I would have daydreamed about in primary school if we hadn't had that gorgeous portrait of the young, blue-eyed Elizabeth in her sash and crown above chalkboard. Thanks for reading!
