The second part of my conversation with Terry Fallis begins with me (having thoroughly researched his early political career on Wikipedia just hours before) if it’s really true he was a campaign strategist for Richard Nixon?
To which he charitably responds: “Er no, Robert Nixon. Bob Nixon was the finance minister in the first Peterson government.1”
(Then we laugh as I die a little private death.)
Other topics covered: our shared unshakeable admiration for Canada’s never-not-embattled deputy PM Chrystia Freeland, the wonderful twisted dark side of Stuart Maclean, policy vs. strategy in politics, whether comic writing can be taught (short answer: no, but maybe kind of?), whither the publishing industry, why writers love doing book club appearances and the inevitable: how we’re both finding Substack.
If you’re a writer or aspiring writer, especially in the comic sphere, Terry’s got a load of wisdom — and laughs — to share.
You can subscribe to Terry’s marvellous newsletter, A Novel Journey here. His latest book, Operation Angus, is out now, you can read more about it and his other books, as well as buy copies, through his website.
